CHAPTER EIGHT

When Billie and Waffles reached the gate, Asher stood on the other side, his face drawn. Dark circles had formed below his eyes since she’d last seen him.

“What happened?” he asked.

Billie did her best to explain in the gentlest way and before she could say anymore, he rushed away.

Waffles moaned soulfully after him, clearly upset that Asher had failed to give him any attention.

“Wait! Where are you going?” She received no reply, but already knew the answer. “Sully said she’d come talk to you after.”

“Billie,” Polly called from the built-in deck attached to the fifth wheel. “What’s going on? Where is Asher going?”

“Hold on,” Billie said. “Let me get this guy squared away and I’ll be right back.” She walked the dog around the trailer and urged him into his dog pen. He was less than cooperative. She pushed him through the open gate by his hindquarters and snapped the leash off of his collar just before she shut the gate in a hurry.

“Sounds like you were dealing with a spoiled pooch there for a minute,” Polly said when Billie returned.

“You can say that again,” she said. “It was everything I could do to keep him away from the debris we found on the beach.”

“Is that where Asher went, to look at some debris?” Polly asked.

Billie nodded and turned her head to gaze in the general direction. “We went for a walk down the south side and I came across a huge pile of driftwood and seaweed. I saw a yellow raft tangled up in all of it and wondered if it might have been the raft missing from the sailboat.”

“I wasn’t aware there was a raft missing,” Polly said, frowning. “Do you think it has anything to do with those men?”

“Yes, I do,” Billie said bluntly. “I hate to say that, because it’s not a good development, but it’s also why I sent a photo of it to Sully.”

“Where was it? I thought the other dinghy was found much closer to the marina.”

“Oh, it was,” Billie said. “And I was almost to South Point when I spotted it.”

“Are you sure this one was actually from the sailboat? I can imagine all sorts of debris washes ashore,” Polly said.

“Sully matched a serial number to the sailboat.”

“Oh, wow,” Polly said. “I really don’t think Asher should be going there. I’m assuming that’s where he went, anyway.”

“What do you mean?” Billie asked. “No one wants to deal with something like this, but I think Asher can handle it.”

Polly shook her head. “I don’t know about that,” she said. “Asher seems different right now. He’s quiet and withdrawn and although my sister and I haven’t been here as long as the others, I think I can safely say that he is absolutely not himself.”

Billie sighed. She turned and looked toward the southern beach again. “It can’t be easy on him,” she said. “These guys were his best friends since college, and now two of them are dead.”

“And they died while they were here visiting him,” Polly added.
